Tummy Tuck Plastic Surgery in Hollywood, Florida
The following information is for your benefit. Here you will find answers to many of the questions that patients ask about plastic surgery of the abdomen.

Why should I have tummy tuck?

Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck surgery is a surgical procedure for tightening the abdominal skin and musculature. It can also eliminate or improve the appearance of scars of the lower abdomen. In some women, pregnancies cause the abdominal skin and muscles to become loose and flabby. In other women, and men, excessive weight gain followed by weight reduction leaves a layer of loose excessive skin and stretched out, thin musculature. Abdominoplasty is to designed to correct these conditions.

Can I use tummy tuck surgery as a method to be slimmer ?

Some patients think abdominoplasty is a weight loss or fat reduction technique. This is not so. Nor is it a substitute for a healthy diet or sensible exercise. Patients should be at normal or near normal weight before surgery.

How is the tummy tuck procedure performed?

Full abdominoplasty is performed on those patients requiring maximum correction. The operation is performed through a horizontal incision low on the abdomen at or slightly above the level or the pubic hair. The abdominal musculature is tightened with stitches and any hernias or weaknesses are repaired. The umbilicus (belly button) is usually circumscribed during the operation. It remains in the same position on the abdominal wall but is brought out through a new opening.

In some patients requiring lesser corrections, a more modified or limited procedure is performed, usually on the lower abdomen only. The umbilicus remains in place and the scars are usually smaller. At the time of your consultation, the options of a full or more limited abdominoplasty should be discussed and a determination should be made as to which is the more appropriate procedure for you.

How long does the tummy tuck operation take?

The length of tummy tuck surgery ranges from 3-5 hours depending on what procedure is done.

Does a tuck require hospitalization?

Full abdominoplasty requires hospitalization. The patient is admitted the morning of surgery. Discharge will be the next day usually in the afternoon.

Mini-abdominoplasties can be done in the hospital or outpatient facility. The patient reports to the facility the morning of surgery and will remain in recovery for 2-3 hours until they are ready to go home. Patients who live more than one hour away must stay overnight in the area after surgery. If you desire, we will recommend a nearby hotel.

You will need to have a friend or close relative accompany you when you leave the surgical facility or hospital. This person will need to remain with you overnight, and accompany you when you return to the office for your postoperative check. If a friend or relative is not available to you, we will recommend a nurse.

You will be told at the time of your consultation appointment if your surgery will require an overnight stay at the hospital.

What type of anesthesia will be used during my tummy tuck surgery?

All abdominoplasties are done under general anesthesia, which is given by an expert anesthesiologist. These services will be provided by the facility where your surgery is performed and the fee for this service will be billed separately.

What can I expect after my tummy tuck surgery?

If you have a full abdominoplasty, you will remain in bed until the next morning. You can expect some discomfort and pain in the incision, but this is alleviated with medication and gradually subsides as you begin to walk. A narrow bandage on the incision is removed the day after surgery and you may shower. Most stitches are internal and self-dissolving. The skin stitches will need to be removed approximately ten days following the operation. If a support girdle is placed it will be worn for a month after surgery.

When can I return to work following surgery?

Most people return to their work and usual activities two weeks after the tummy tuck operation. Strenuous sports, however, are prohibited for two to three months.
