Liposuction Plastic Surgery in Hollywood, Florida
The following information is for your benefit. Here you will find answers to many of the questions that patients ask about liposuction.

Why should I have liposuction?

The purpose of liposuction is to remove localized deposits of subcutaneous (under the skin) fat from anywhere in the body. You may be a candidate for liposuction if you have excess subcutaneous fat, which is resistant to diet and exercise and/or you wish to change the contours of your body. Commonly involved areas are the anterior part of the neck (under the chin), upper arms and armpits, male chest/breasts trunk, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, inner knees, calves, and ankles. Improved techniques now allow larger amounts of fat removal. Liposculpture can be useful to heavier persons as well.

What should I expect my outcome to be?

The final appearance of the area contoured should show improvement in the contour and proportion of the treated area with a more flattering figure or physique, in or out of clothing. Your general state of health, the overall condition of your skin, age, weight, hormonal influences, and other factors will influence your appearance following suction lipectomy. Each patient is unique, and during your consultation your doctor should discuss with you in detail how these general factors apply to you in particular.

How does the doctor do the surgery?

A one-eighth to one-quarter inch incision is made near the area from which the fat is to be removed, and a specially designed surgical cannula (tube) is placed through the incision into the fat. The cannula is attached by flexible tubing to a vacuum pump, which removes the fat, by suction as the cannula is manipulated beneath the skin.

How long does the operation take?

The operation can last 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on how many areas are being treated.

What kind of anesthesia will I have?

When only one or two small areas are treated, particularly on the face and neck, the patient is given local anesthesia. When multiple or large areas are treated, general anesthesia is used and an expert anesthetist is present. The type of anesthesia used when multiple or large areas are treated should be discussed at the time of the consultation and usually the anesthetist charges separately for his/her services.

Does liposuction surgery require hospitalization?

Liposuction is done as an ambulatory surgery, reporting to the facility the morning of surgery and remaining about two hours after the operation is completed. Patients who live more than one hour away from the facility must stay overnight in the area after surgery. If you desire, we will recommend a nearby hotel.

Can i take care of myself after surgery?

You will need to have someone with you when you leave the facility after the operation, remain with you overnight, and accompany you when you return to the office the next day for a postoperative check. If a relative or friend is not available, we will recommend a nurse.

What can I expect after surgery?

There are usually small bandages or dressings and most patients will have some support garment after surgery. If the garment is placed after surgery you will wear it for 4-6 weeks after the operation. You can remove this garment for showering. There is usually some discomfort following surgery. You will have a prescription for pain medication.

When can I go back to work?

All patients may return to work when released by the doctor. Vigorous sports are prohibited for three weeks. If skin tightening is done, recovery may be longer.

Will liposuction surgery leave scars?

In the past, scars from the body contouring were long and conspicuous. In suction lipectomy, however, scars are usually less than one-quarter inch long and can be placed in natural body creases or in other areas where they are inconspicuous or easily hidden by clothing or a bathing suit. The scars are rarely troublesome. Nevertheless, you should know that all scars are permanent and height, width, and final color are not totally predictable.

How long will the result of the surgery last?

There will by a permanent improvement in the contour and proportion of the treated area with a more flattering figure or physique, in or out of clothing. Suction lipectomy is not a substitute for a healthy diet nor is it useful for generalized weight reduction. As stated previously, your general state of health, the overall condition of your skin, age, weight, hormonal influences, and other factors will influence your appearance following this surgery. Each patient is unique, and during your consultation, how general factors apply to you in particular should be discussed.
