Breast Lift Plastic Surgery in Hollywood, Florida
The following information is for your benefit. Here you will find answers to many of the questions that patients ask about breast lift surgery.
WHY SHOULD I HAVE A BREAST LIFT?
Some women note that with the passage of years, particularly after child bearing, their breasts begin to sag and lose their shape. The upper portions of the breast frequently diminish in fullness and projection.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT MY OUTCOME TO BE FOLLOWING BREAST LIFT SURGERY?
The goal of the breast lift procedure is to make the breasts look higher, rounder and more youthful. Breast lifting alone does not enlarge the breasts. Patients who desire or need enlargement for optimal aesthetic results can have breast augmentation with saline implants at the same time as mastopexy. Augmentation is particularly helpful in filling out the upper portions of the breast.
HOW DOES THE DOCTOR DO THE BREAST LIFT SURGERY?
Mastopexy removes excess stretched skin, moves the breast to a higher position, and reshapes them.
WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA WILL BE USED DURING BREAST LIFT SURGERY?
Either local or general anesthesia can be used. Local anesthesia is combined with light sedation so that the patient remains drowsy although she will remember some parts of the operation. When general anesthesia is used, the patient is totally unaware. An expert anesthetist who charges separately for his services gives both anesthesias.
HOW LONG DOES THE BREAST LIFT OPERATION TAKE?
The breast lift operation takes about two hours.
DOES BREAST LIFT SURGERY REQUIRE HOSPITALIZATION?
You may have mastopexy on an ambulatory basis, reporting to the office or the hospital early in the morning and leaving about four hours after surgery. Patients who live more than one hour away must stay overnight nearby after surgery. If you desire, we will recommend a nearby hotel or special facility available for post-op cosmetic surgical patients. You will need to have someone with you when you leave the hospital or office, remain with you overnight, and accompany you when you return to the office the day after surgery for a postoperative check. If a relative or friend is not available to you, we will recommend a nurse.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER BREAST LIFT SURGERY?
After the breast lift operation, small bandages are placed over the incisions and your bra is put on in the operating room. Plan to wear a bra continually for three weeks following surgery. Of course, you may remove the bra when bathing. You will sleep on your back for the first two weeks in a semi-elevated position (on two pillows). You will experience transient discomfort for a few hours when the anesthesia first wears off. This can be alleviated by medication. All patients return to the office four to five days after surgery for stitch removal, which is painless.
WHEN CAN I GO BACK TO WORK FOLLOWING BREAST LIFT SURGERY?
Most patients return to work four to five days after breast lift surgery, depending on the level of activity at your place of employment. Most daily activities can be resumed at that time. Gradual return to sports is permitted starting one week after surgery, but vigorous arm and shoulder movements should be avoided for one month.
WHAT TYPE OF SCARRING CAN I EXPECT FOLLOWING BREAST LIFT SURGERY?
Any form of surgery, including plastic surgery, will leave scars. In mastopexy, the scars are placed either in natural skin demarcation lines around the areola or on the under surface of the breast so that they are as inconspicuous as possible. The scars tend to fade with time and are usually not troublesome. Nevertheless, you should be aware that scars are permanent, and their size and color are not totally predictable.
HOW PERMANENT ARE THE RESULTS OF BREAST LIFT SURGERY?
The loss of elasticity, which caused the original sagging of the breast, can recur, and occasional patients lose part or all of their improvement over variable periods of time. Rarely, a patient will request re-operation to lift the breasts again. The vast majorities of patients maintain their results and do not require any secondary procedures. Fluctuations in your body weight 15-30 lbs. or more can increase chances of reoccurrence of sagging.
